undefinedSerious Acoustic Blues*Hotel Bravo Review, 12-Bar Rag* It was at a friend's house one Sunday afternoon, sitting on the porch talking about plants, of all things. The music was on in the living room. About eight bars after CD changed I said. What is THIS? My friend proceeded to tell it was a pre-release copy on the Napoleon Washington CD, nobody is supposed to have it yet. In my most adult whimper I said, But, I WANT it ! He said In good time, Grasshopper, or something to that effect. Well, now I have it and it is a tasty acoustic slide resonator, recorded in a freight yard, under a bridge. How Blue is that? The side opens with the bare bones Blues of Same Steel, a Washington original. Nothing here but washington on guitar and vocal. Deep, gutsy guitar and vocal. The rest of the band joins in for the haunting Dance On My Grave, most notably harp player Bonny B. A Hundred Days sounds more Piedmont in musical structure. Despite the slide guitar it's almost mountain music. (My inside source tells me the drummer payed one song on a mutton roast to get a nice, slapping effect. I bet this is the song). The sole song on the recording that Washington did not write is Big Mama's Door, an Alvin Youngblood Hart song. The previous versions I've heard of the tune are much more Chicago, this one just hopped a freight in from the Delta. This disc is serious acoustic Blues - well written and produced - but I knew it would be. Washington has toured the Tampa Bay area twice in his previous incarnation as Raph Bettex of the Crawlin' Kingsnake Blues Band, (a Rock Bottom protege). Although this disc has received interest (and praise) from Bruce Iglauer at Alligator and Ruf records, it is an independent release, available only at napoleonwashington.com. I'd suggest you give it a listen. George Willet, Twelve Bar Rag, Suncoast Blues Society (Florida) **Website created by Artinbox Multimedia.© 2010 - Napoleon Washington - Napoleon Washington
